How to separate, grind, and polish crystalline pottery (Uncategorized)

This video is a follow-up video from the previous post on how to prepare your pieces for crystalline glazing. You’ve fired your piece, hopefully it has emerged from the kiln with crystals and in one piece, so now what? There are many different techniques to separate your piece from the pedestal and clean up the sharp edge that is often present. I am a bit more meticulous than others when it comes to this, as I really want to make sure that my edges are clean, smooth, and the piece won’t scratch furniture. I use several different techniques including diamond and silicon carbide grinding wheels on a bench grinder, diamond laps to level and smooth the bottoms, flexible diamond hand blocks, and a Dremel tool when necessary. The cost of all the tools can add up if you are wanting to be prepared in all situations and for all sizes of work. I recommend starting with a 6″ or 8″ bench grinder and a medium grit silicon carbide wheel. You should be able to get both of these for under $100 and it will get you 80%+ of the way there with most of your work. See the video below for more details.
